Modern communications solutions for efficient logistics: Intertrans GmbH optimises infrastructure with Gigaset, STARFACE and PointOmega
Efficient communication is the backbone of any modern logistics operation. Intertrans GmbH, a medium-sized freight forwarding company established for over 60 years, was faced with the challenge of renewing its outdated telecommunications infrastructure. Together with Gigaset, STARFACE and PointOmega, MBC Mannheim implemented a customised communication solution for Intertrans that optimises both internal communication and processes on the company's extensive premises.
Company profile
Intertrans GmbH is an owner-managed freight forwarding company with more than 60 years of experience in national and international transport services. With over 100 employees, the company offers a broad portfolio of freight forwarding services, including Europe-wide bulk goods transport. Thanks to strong partnerships in Western and Eastern Europe, Intertrans is able to continuously develop and offer its customers excellent service.
The initial situation / challenge
Until 2023, the Intertrans freight forwarding company was dependent on an outdated telephone system that no longer met modern requirements. In particular, the limited accessibility while on the road or working from home was a major problem. In addition, Intertrans needed a reliable DECT system to reach employees both inside and outside the 5.6 hectare company premises with over 45 loading gates. The existing stand-alone paging solution also proved to be insufficient, as it affected the efficiency of loading and unloading the trucks.
The Solution
Together with STARFACE Excellence+ partner MBC Mannheim, Intertrans decided to modernise their communications infrastructure. The solution consists of the STARFACE VM Edition, Gigaset R700H PRO handsets and an advanced paging solution from Point Omega.
The robust R700H PRO handsets from Gigaset, known for their IP protection class and ruggedised design, are ideal for use in the harsh environment of a freight terminal. These handsets enable drivers to communicate reliably even in difficult conditions – even if the device is dropped. Thanks to comprehensive DECT coverage throughout the company premises, seamless communication is guaranteed at all times.
In addition, the old paging solution was replaced by a Point Omega alarm server, which, in combination with Gigaset's ‘Alarm, Messaging and Location’ (AML) solution, enables optimised coordination of truck drivers. Drivers receive an R700H PRO handset when they enter the premises, which can be used to receive and confirm messages and to make direct phone calls to the dispatcher.
For internal drivers, Point Omega developed a STARFACE chat interface that allows messages to be sent directly to the chat via the alarm server. This integration allows drivers to communicate with the dispatcher regardless of their location. The dispatchers use a specially developed web frontend that takes information from the ERP system via drag-and-drop to efficiently control the loading and unloading process.
The solution also offers great potential for future expansions, such as the automation of data transfer from the ERP system and the integration of proximity sensors at the loading bays. In addition, the Gigaset localisation service can be used to locate the handsets on the premises and set up alarm scenarios to increase the safety of employees.
Thanks to this customised solution, Intertrans GmbH has been able to future-proof its communications infrastructure while also achieving significant improvements in process and cost optimisation. All employees are now better connected, which significantly increases collaboration and efficiency within the company.
